A trimming from a tree may find it hard to escape its parent. So does Dan Heng; as the reincarnation of the convict Dan Feng, he bears the sins of his ancestor, punished since his birth for crimes he never committed. And yet, he carries the body of his predecessor, shaped into Dan Feng's image and coerced to remember the past life he would rather not claim for himself.

But others may always see that as him, so he must carry that weight forever. Dan Feng had committed an Unpardonable Sin and politics will always seek someone to punish despite the vidyadharan custom of leaving past lives behind; by toying with immortality, Dan Feng placed Dan Heng's life to be raised in prison, leaving him in isolation and withstanding banishment once he could manage for himself. His exodus from his homeland- could it be a homeland if he'd only spent a few hours on its surface?- was the only pardon he would receive for many, many years.

Out there, he was just Dan Heng. He was simply just another human lost in the stars, hopping from ship to ship, scrounging for jobs to last until the next ship. Most of the time he'd be driven off by an immortal man seeking revenge against Dan Feng. Countless flights from this hunt had lead him to the Astral Express where he'd boarded as a guard and archivist, finding his place as a Nameless trailblazing Akivili's legacy.

Given the nature of his history, Dan Heng does not often disclose it. A heavy burden of guilt weighs over him, drives him to be useful to his peers, a soft thrum of anxiety present under that schooled mask he keeps. Outwardly he aims to be nothing but an average, perhaps overworked human. He naturally conceals his emotions, keeping his thoughts close and guarded lest others find offense in his words, giving people nothing to scrutinize. Yet he's honest; he doesn't particularly lie and he often attempts to soften the blows of his words that end up neutralized by the flat affect he speaks in.

Dan Heng is best described as coursing through life, taking things one tomorrow at a time, losing sleep to organizing and archiving to keep himself from falling into ghosts of inherited memories. It's not uncommon that his thoughts will simply be blank as he processes and takes in everything around him, silencing his inner world by losing himself in the outer. Being pulled out of this, whether by force or through idle, rambling conversation, isn't particularly sought out; he's not a talkative person and his friends are the only ones he'll tolerate with conversations of emotional worth. Growing up in chains has left him with a sense of insecurity and desperation to cling to what little he actually has.

He shows his love in little ways. He's not cold-hearted, just guarded, opening up to his loved ones by easing up around them, teasing them or engaging in their jokes, listening to their conversations, and performing tasks that are ultimately out of his way to do. Comfort comes in this acceptance; with the connections he makes, Dan Heng becomes truly himself, immersed in his own adventures rather than the shackles of the past.
